Imago Dei

A theological reflection on Anti-Slavery Day. This Tuesday was EU Anti-Slavery Day. Modern-day slavery, often referred to as human trafficking, is the fastest growing crime in the world, affecting millions (the last official estimate was 45 million) of people. It is driven by greed for power and money and takes advantage of so many forms of humanContinue reading “Imago Dei”

So you want to end human trafficking…

There is something inside you that screams when you hear about the precious lives of men, women, and children who are coerced and exploited in the name of money, or power, or greed. Maybe you’ve heard a story of someone who was trafficked and you just can’t get them out of your mind. Or maybeContinue reading “So you want to end human trafficking…”

3 Ways We Can End Slavery…Now.

It was our first night in southern India. Akil, our instant and forever friend, picked us up at the busy airport and navigated through four hours of bumpy roads, stray dogs, and impossible turns. The smell of condensed milk mixed with spices filled with air, unfamiliar music – no, musics – played all at the same time, and I knew this wasContinue reading “3 Ways We Can End Slavery…Now.”

Sick of ‘being ethical’. Whatever that means.

My cousin called me a rabble-rouser and I’m sick of it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a compliment. But ugh. You see, Wee Frizz, when she called me that, was referring to the fact that she has become involved in the #makefashiontraffikfree campaign after a few chats/links we shared. And I’m so glad. I got teary-eyedContinue reading “Sick of ‘being ethical’. Whatever that means.”

40

40. The number of victims recovered from trafficking in NI since April 2013*. (We said 39 originally, but 1 rescued from cannabis cultivation last week.) The highest annual total so far – over 170% higher than last year – which is down to effective policing and heightened community awareness (NOT to an increase in the activityContinue reading “40”

Trafficking in NI: statistics, media, panic and hope.

NI is panicking. There has been an 173% increase in human trafficking here in the past year. Nothing is being done – how could there be, with such awful news? ♠ NI is celebrating.
