It’s no secret that The Lyric is one of my favourite places to be. Even more so when I’m there to enjoy some musical theatre from Blunt Fringe. I knew that we were in for a treat if tonight was to be anything like The Last Five Years, and goodness…I was right.
First produced by Cameron Mackintosh in New York over 20 years ago, the Lyric was home to Irish premiere of Putting It Together, a dazzling Sondheim celebration. A musical review that tells a story: set at a cocktail party in New York City, two couples reflect on the complexities that make up modern relationships.
A beautiful set (is it wrong to steal props?) graced by a cast of seasoned performers who still managed to make the audience feel like they were singing every note for the first time; a medley of Sondheim masterpieces that have you in stitches one minute and goosebumps the next; electric chemistry and a superbly crafted story. Essentially, a must-see!
Featuring classics from the musicals of Stephen Sondheim including Sweeney Todd, Merrily We Roll Along, Follies, Company, Sunday In The Park With George, Into The Woods and many more showcased by the inimitable Fra Fee, Nicholas Pound, Brad Clapson, Carol Starks and Christina Tedders, Putting It Together runs at the Lyric from 9-19th December. And you really should go! Be quick though, my Instagram friends are already in line for tickets after hearing about tonight. Book yours here.
